Hyatt

Located at the prominent intersection of Georgia and Thurlow, this landmark tower rises approximately 650 feet and remains the tallest building in Vancouver. The 62 storey mixed use development integrates retail and restaurants at street level, while the first 15 floors were originally home to the Shangri-La Hotel, the luxury brand’s first North American property. The hotel has since been rebranded and now operates as the Hyatt, while the residential component above includes 234 live and work condominiums along with 66 exclusive estate suites.

The approximately $350 million project was developed through a partnership between Westbank Projects and Peterson Investment Group, with Ledcor serving as construction manager. The tower’s design was led by renowned Vancouver architect James Cheng, whose work helped establish the building as one of the city’s most recognizable architectural landmarks.

The exterior is defined by a distinctive glass curtain wall system that incorporates a textured layer of small square panels often referred to as “buttons.” These elements add depth and colour to the façade while also helping conceal portions of the tower’s ventilation systems.

Sustainability played an important role in the building’s design. Constructed to LEED Silver standards and approaching Gold level performance, the development includes geothermal heating and cooling, energy efficient lighting systems, green roof features, and extensive landscaping that includes approximately 57,000 bamboo plants.

The construction process itself was notable in scale. At peak activity nearly 1,000 workers were on site, with crews completing roughly one floor each week. The project required a record breaking excavation for Vancouver, reaching a depth of 26 metres, or about 85 feet, and removing roughly 80,000 cubic metres of material. Supporting the approximately 700,000 square foot tower is a massive reinforced concrete foundation core measuring about 100 feet by 100 feet and 12 feet deep, with an estimated construction cost of one million dollars.
