How to Make Moving into a New Home Easier on Your Pets.

Let’s face it moving can be stressful, to say the least. Did you know that it also affects your pets? While you cannot explain to your pet what’s happening, we have listed a few things to consider before and after your move, making the transition a little easier.

A pre moving tour
If possible, take your pet to the new home before you move in officially. This will allow it to become familiar with the house, the yard and new smells before you actually move in.

Talk to your Vet
Your vet probably has a very good understanding of your dog or cat. Depending on how highly strung or anxious your pet is, a mild calming medication may be in order once you have moved in.  Your vet would be the best judge of this.

Give your pet time to explore the new home
After the move, let your pet gradually explore the home, instead of letting it lose immediately. Limit it to one area for a few hours before moving it into another. Keep all its familiar possessions like its toys, bed, food bowl nearby, allowing some familiarity.

It’s not a bad idea to keep the dog on a leash while exploring new areas. Also, if you have a fenced yard, make sure there are no gaps in the fence or places where the dog can dig out from under the fence.

Go for walks in the new neighborhood.
It is important to allow the dog to have a good “sniff around” the neighborhood enabling it to get acclimatized to its new surroundings. Let it spend time exploring while on the leash and don’t be in a hurry to move on.

Be around the pet for the first week
It’s a good idea to have someone around the house during the first week to establish a routine with the pet.  Just leaving your pet in a new surrounding for hours while you go to work, can be very stressful for it. Try and feed your pets and take the dog for walks at the same time as you did at your old home.

Update the tags and IDs
Its best if you do this before the move, as once you have moved in, you will have a lot to accomplish and this important task will be easily forgotten.  Enquire with the local municipality regarding dog licensing laws, which may be different from the existing ones.
