Whether you live in an apartment building or in a detached home, having a good neighbor is a real blessing. “A neighbor is closer than a relative” is a popular saying that has a lot of merit to it. A good neighbor can be counted on to water your garden, take care of your mail when you are on vacation, and even babysit your children incase of an emergency.
In case you are someone who is blessed to have a good neighbor, then it becomes very important for you too, to be a good neighbor in return. So if you are not sure on how to approach a new neighbor when you have moved into the area, here are a few tips to cultivate a relationship:
- Take the time to introduce yourself. Let your neighbor know who you are and what you do. You may have a lot in common. Do the same for people who have just moved into the area. Give them tips on where the best schools are, where to get groceries from, a good gardener etc.
- Invite your neighbor home. Inviting your neighbor for a meal or drinks is a way of showing you appreciate their goodness. It also creates a bond between the households as your family gets to know your neighbor’s family.
- Help in times of need. There is no better time of showing gratitude to your neighbors in times of need. Be a source of support. Many a times people disappear when a problem surfaces; be there when your neighbors need help and support. A good neighbor will never forget your generous gesture.
- Always respect your neighbor’s privacy and their property. Don’t pry into their personal affairs. If they want you to know what’s going on in their lives, they’ll tell you. If you borrow something, a lawn mower or a cup of sugar, make sure you return it as soon as possible. Don’t make them come over and ask for it.
- Appreciate their kindness with a gift. The idea behind giving a thank you gift is the gratefulness you feel for their kind actions. The gift is a small token of appreciation for your neighbors who have helped you when you needed the help.
